Should I Bundle My Home and Auto Insurance?

Choosing to bundle home and auto insurance is a decision commonly made to save money. There are many benefits to bundling your home and auto insurance with the same insurer, such as keeping everything in one place. However, this choice isn’t for everyone. You should consider different aspects of your home and car insurance needs before bundling your coverage.

Finances

In many cases, insurance providers offer a discount for policyholders who bundle their home and auto insurance. This can range between 5% and 25%. You can also choose to have a single deductible rather than paying separate deductibles for both your home and auto insurance claims.

However, the discount isn’t always worth it—especially if your premiums increase or your auto insurance is already expensive. If you have a poor driving record or past claims that make your auto insurance expensive, it could cause a bundle to be more expensive, as well—in which case choosing different insurers may be the better option.

Bundling home and auto also leave open the possibility of the insurer raising your rates. You may not notice these increases or wish not to leave due to having all of your insurance in one place, as you are less likely to compare quotes when you’re bundling.

Coverage Needs

On the other hand, keeping your coverage can be easier if you bundle with a single insurer. For example, say you bundle your home and auto insurance with a single insurance provider. You are involved in an accident and normally, you may face a cancelled policy. However, insurers are less likely to drop you as a client even after an accident or claim if you have more than one line of insurance with them, as they don’t want to lose your business.

Also keep in mind that some insurance providers don’t actually bundle your policies. Instead, they may send you to an affiliate company, which means paying your premiums with two different insurers even though they are technically connected. You may still earn a discount for bundling this way, though.

Overall, be sure to speak with your insurance agent and discuss your options when looking to bundle more than one policy with the same insurance provider. Not all insurance needs are the same and deciding what to do with your policy is an important decision to make with the help of an insurance professional.
