Home InsuranceA leak inside of your home can be a nuisance to deal with, but the problems go beyond aesthetics. Drywall ceilings or walls that remain saturated for some time can not only lead to structural damage within your home, but it can also cause dangerous mold and mildew to develop, which can threaten the health of your family. So if you notice visible signs of water damage in your ceiling — such as sagging or stained drywall — take action quickly to make necessary repairs before the issue grows larger.

The first thing you must do is locate the source of the leak, which must be fixed before repairing the drywall to prevent continual damages. It may be beneficial to call in professionals since the leak can travel quite far from its source. Once the leak is fixed, dry the affected areas with towels and fans as much as possible, then lay down a tarp to protect the space you're working in.

Begin removing drywall with the claw end of a hammer or a wrecking bar. If the ceiling has bulged down, be careful when piercing it since water may pour out of any holes you make. You can also cut away damaged areas with a saw. Make sure you wear safety glasses and a dust mask during this process.

After removal, a new patch of drywall can be installed, primed and painted (with the windows open for ventilation). If you're not familiar with this process, you can consult the employees at your local home improvement store or simply hire a professional to get the job done.

With the drywall repaired, carefully pick up the tarp, wash the paint brushes/rollers and vacuum the area. Everything should look good as new! And with the leak fixed, you can rest at ease knowing that your house and family are safe from the previous hazards.
