Safety Tips for Winter Texas Motorcyclists

image of motorcycle driving through TexasSeptember still has plentiful opportunities for pleasant weather, but seasonal changes still beckon. As autumn and winter approach, the chances for hazardous road conditions increase, even in Texas. All drivers face risks, but motorcyclists may face unique and enhanced operating issues.

Motorcycles need special operating skills. Their riders also face special personal risks when riding on the open road. Winter risks often differ from summer risks. So, riders should take these changes under advisement when riding. Doing so may help the rider protect their safety and insurance risks while riding.

Improving Bike Safety During Winter

The winter may lead to inclement weather, reduced visibility and road hazards. Before hitting the road, motorcycle riders should protect their bikes and their own safety.

  • Perform regular maintenance on the bike. Replacing the oil, fixing suspension and tire systems, and making small repairs may increase the bike’s road-worthiness. If the bike functions optimally, the risk of catastrophic failures in winter conditions may fall.
  • Often, cold weather and freezing temperatures may damage a bike. Vital systems may freeze, corrode or break in these conditions. Protect the bike’s systems and fluids with proper storage, coolant and antifreeze levels.
  • Cold temperatures may affect tire pressure. Worn tire treads may not effectively stabilize the bike on wet or frozen roads. Therefore, inspect your tires often. A strong set of tires can help the biker better control the bike and avoid accidents.
  • Make sure that your bike’s lights work. The winter will bring darkness earlier. Additionally, inclement weather may limit visibility and make operations hard for bikers. An adequate lighting system can help motorcycle riders stay safe in dark conditions.
  • Wear weather-appropriate clothing when riding your bike. You should always use a helmet, regardless of whether the law requires one. Cold temperatures and wind may also make a biker more susceptible to frostbite, illness or exposure. Insulated clothing, sturdy shoes and handlebar gloves may help protect the rider.

Since winter weather increases motorcycle safety risks, always use caution when operating the motorcycle. Pleasure riders should try not to operate in inclement weather. They should also use caution at all times when riding.

Winter Bike Insurance Risks

Whether operating in winter or summer, your motorcycle insurance can come in handy. Collision, comprehensive and liability coverage may help if you have an accident in winter conditions.

Furthermore, insurance frequently doesn’t cover normal wear and tear. That’s why it is crucial that bikers maintain their bike and prevent winter weather-related deterioration. You may not get coverage for this damage.
